Content Management Systems
What is a Content Management System (CMS)?
A content management system is an online interface provided with many modern websites that allows you to freely update content on your website. Whether you publish information (such as events, news, research findings, photos, or products) or collect information (ie. surveys, polls, employment applications, orders) an integrated content management system is the essential ingredient to making your website a valuable and active tool. Enigma Digital builds most online projects around a content management system to reduce your on-going maintenance costs and ensure we can focus on online strategy and website improvements - not updating micro-managing your website.
Content Management Systems can:
- Reduce maintenance charges
- Save you time
- Be used with little training
- Give you control over your website from anywhere
- Help you organise and search large volumes of content
- Maintain consistency of your website's look and feel
- Be completely customised to suit your design and content needs
Open-Source vs Proprietary systems
Open-Source content management systems are built and maintained by a community of people around the world. All aspects of an open-source project are open to the scrutiny of other community members. Having lots of people using, discussing, and improving the system means it is kept on the cutting-edge of technology, remains flexible, and any issues are highlighted and addressed immediately. Open-Source projects are essentially funded by the businesses that use them as when new websites are developed, improvements are contributed back to the community to help others and save them time in the future.
Proprietary content management systems are built to ensure ownership and direction over the future of the system is retained. This often results in a smaller group of in-house individuals whom have authority to make improvements. In order to fund changes proprietary systems often require businesses to pay an on-going license fee to help fund the developers of the project. Depending on the size of the development team behind the proprietary system, improvements and security patches can take a long time to be released.
At Enigma Digital, we use open-source systems as we believe being locked in to a proprietary system with on-going yearly fees is not in your best interests. Paying for a website with a proprietary CMS is like buying a car with the bonnet welded shut - you won't be able to get under the hood to change the oil if you need to, and if the salesyard disappears you will have no recourse for support. In contrast, our websites do not carry any on-going licensing fees, and our code is written in a format any development house may extend.
Drupal - a flexible and powerful CMS
Most of our online projects are built using the open-source CMS Drupal as it offers a high level of flexibility, a streamlined development environment, and ease of use for our clients. With over 350,000 websites presently using Drupal, more than 3,700 active developers, and over 700,000 community members, Drupal has established itself as a strong platform for online projects.
